Sunny corners

Here is a sunny corner in my bedroom. It's something for the Corners of my Home group on Flickr. The group was started by Soulemama, and I think its a wonderful idea, to photograph corners and favorite spaces around your house.

I need to think of sunny things as much as possible right now. My mom has been in the hospital this week. She is still in ICU but improving at a steady pace.

Tails from the drawing table

So sorry I haven't posted since last Tuesday! I got a nifty assignment with a fast turnaround (I love those by the way). These are some sketches of the main character, a foxy little guy named Ron. Now to me that's really funny because my neighbor is also named Ron. So it was interesting to see if some of my neighbor's characteristics would find their way into my drawings. If you knew my neighbor I think you would say... nope!

The finished art is due Friday, so I'm not sure if I will be able to get any more posts up this week. Well, maybe one or two. I took some pics for the Corners of My Home group on Flickr, and perhaps I will find a few minutes to share some of them.

Letters and l'ele-fonts

I love to play with letters. Ever since my graphic design days I've loved to fiddle with letterforms and fonts. Last night I had a spark of an idea for a logo using my initials, which have up till now been a source of frustration. It seemed there was nothing interesting one could do with JBH. But I really like this little guy! I'm calling him (her?) L'ele. Short for L'elephant of course. Now I guess I need to use it somewhere, probably as a new link button to my website. I wish I had a shop, it would make a cute little sign! Perhaps someday...

Now for the fun stuff!

When I showed L'ele to my daughter, she said it reminded her of how years ago I showed her a trick to help her tell the difference between the lower case letters 'b' and 'd'. She is left-handed, and occasionally would switch them. So this is what I came up with. You start with the words boy and dog.

For boy, I drew a boy kicking a soccer ball, the 'b' is his foot, and the 'o' is the ball.

For dog, I drew a nose and ears on the 'd' and legs and a tail on the 'o'.

So any time she wasn't sure which way to write the letter, she only had to remember the visual images and she'd have the answer!

Illustration Friday - Sea

This week's theme for Illustration Friday is sea. This piece is from the second book I illustrated for Standard Press.

Looking at it here, I wish I had given the sand more of a textured look. Oh well, there's nothing I can do about it now. John Nez recently recounted the story of painter who was invited by his patron to stay overnight. Around 3:00 in the morning, the patron heard some noises, and went downstairs to see what it was. There was the artist, with a lantern, up on a step ladder leaning against the mantel, making corrections to a painting he'd finished thirty years ago!
