Write me a bear story
Around 3:30 am I had a bizarre idea. You know, one of those ideas that are either brilliant... or totally crazy. I mulled it over all day and finally decided to just put this out there and see what happens.
The response to the little bear doodle has been really gratifying, and several of you mentioned that he would make a great character for a book. Well, I agree. So here's my idea. Write a story about him, and email it to me. I'll pick my favorite one to illustrate, and if it turns out to be something special, I'll submit it to some publishers and we'll see what they think. I'm not sure this kind of collaboration has ever been done before, but I confess I'm kind of excited about it. The blogisphere is rich with incredible writing talent so I've got my hopes up that this could be a really fun project!
When you've got it ready, send it to: bearstory at jennybharris dot com. It should be a polished text with no sketches or art direction. The deadline is March 22 - the day before Easter.
Needless to say, I respect your copyright, I will keep everything completely private, and you'll get full credit as the author. I'm not offering to buy your manuscript, there would only be payment involved if a publisher chooses to publish, and obviously the terms would be determined at that point with your input and approval. This is a collaboration, and I can't promise anything.
So, what do you think... brilliant or crazy? Stay tuned!
Cheers,
Jenny

I'm in. Lately my 5 year old son and I have been writing stories together. I will have to see what his thoughts are about this cute little bear! He is much more imaginative than me!

Definitely a BRILLIANT idea! I edit for a living, but I also write. And most of what I write is for young adults. HOWEVER ... I absolutely HAVE to try this!

Well, it's definate now.... there's no turning back.
Here's a cute little story for you. My daughter is in grade 3 and they just finished writting a book. There was a "Meet the Author" night where they read their books in front of all the parents. Part of the book was a dedication. Here is my daughters: "This is dedicated to my mom because she is writting a book too!" Sweet little thing she is :) I don't think she understands what I am trying to do but in her eye's I'm an author. Cute huh!

I think it's brilliant! My son's name is Blu, and we call him Blu Bear, and the graphic is a blue bear. I should be able to come up with something! I've been writing little kids stories for years for cousins and things. Oh how exciting to try this!
