Recently I've been thinking about how much I love the random things I've accumulated through the years. Nothing too fancy, they just speak to me for whatever reason, whether they remind me of someone, or I just like the shape or color. Some were picked up at shops, but many came to me from my family, handed down through generations, from my great grandma to my grandma, my mother, then me. So I have started photographing them, and put many of them in an album on Flickr which I call Objects of Affection. Like this china vase from the 30's, isn't she pretty? I've got lavender sprigs in there now, but I think I'd like to try some needlepoint ivy in water. She needs something green and fresh. She was my grandma's and I always remember this perched on the windowsill in her cosy kitchen.
The little lustreware cream and sugar are from my gran's, too. When I was little I used to sit inside a huge flowering shrub behind her house and have tea parties with them. With its picket fence and overflowing flowerbeds, her backyard was such a magical place for me. See? These are much more than mere objects, they each have a story, a memory attached to them.
Lest you think I am solely focused on pretties like china and such, I also have a soft spot for goofy things like this:
One of the collection of retro cars I used to give Ro for birthdays and Christmas. Eventually realized I was more excited about them that he was! I wish I could have a full sized version, but these capture a bit of the fun of the fifties.
I'll be adding more pics to the set no doubt, since I love gathering up these random lovelies and taking their portrait. What can I say... they just make me smile!
Cheers,
Jenny
